:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Angular Square -- Steam-Powered Elephant Ride In 1867 India. : This is from 1880 and is an adventure story,concerning a group of Englishmen and a Frenchman undertaking an unusual journey across Northern India in 1867.These men and their servants travel in the Steam House,two large caravans towed by a gigantic steam-powered elephant.Yes thats right,steam powered elephant.This trip takes place 10 years after the bloody Sepoy mutiny,during which the wife of Colonel Munro,the expedition leader was murdered by the evil Nana Sahib,the leader of the rebels.Munro believes Nana Sahib is alive and plotting another revolt in the Northern regions,so the trip,ostensibly for pleasure has the hidden purpose of searching for Nana Sahib.Initially this story is a travelogue,with Verne providing vivid descriptions of landscapes,towns and people.As the Steam House travels north,we encounter forest fires,hostile elephants,suicidal pilgrims and lots of tigers.Captain Hood and his assistant,Fox are obsessed with shooting tigers,shouting out their new scores with each kill.In this world ,tigers are numerous,vengeful man-eating vermin,terrorising isolated villages and farms.One soon to be shot creature had killed 150 people and nearly caused a village to be abandoned.As the Steam House nears the Himalayas,we learn Nana Sahib is searching for Munro,and one of his men has infiltrated the group and has reported the Steam House's position to Nana Sahib...
