  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Laura PS -- May her memory be eternal, decided Mark Twain : When I first picked up Twain’s Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, I was somewhat daunted by its length; by the time I finished it, however, I wished that it were longer. In fact, I read slowly, taking care not to skip over phrases as I often do, so that I could savor it for as long as possible. This story is simply that lovely. Or, better said, the story itself is not lovely, recounting as it does the engineered fall of a young woman, but the writing, and the characters are so lush and lively and pathos-inspiring, that I wished I might keep reading about them. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kathy Donnelly -- Very disappointed : Photo copied so that the image does not fill to the margins. The image only reaches about half the page. Not only is it displeasing to look at but the print is so small it is almost unreadable. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2016 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Weldman69 -- Get your magnifiers on!! : Microscopic print ( Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Owen C. Marshall -- And every page seems a labor of love. If you are familiar with the story of ... : This was the work that Mark Twain was most proud of. And having just finished it, I can understand why. Twelve years of research. Two years to write. And every page seems a labor of love. If you are familiar with the story of Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, then give it a try. Just note that this is historical fiction. Twain has created a childhood friend to tell the story and act as biographer. His trademark wit is still there, but none of it is focused on her. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tiger Laura -- Best Book Ever : This is the book for you if: you like strong women, or you like history, or you like St. Joan of Arc, or you like a good story, or you're Catholic. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Adam Graham -- The Woman Who Touched the Heart of Mark Twain : This is a book that many people who like Mark Twain don't like despite Twain avouching to be his best work. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2014 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Paul gorman -- A truly fantastic treasure : I consider myself so very fortunate to have found this wonderful book. I have read a number of books on Joan of Arc, but this one is exceptional because it is written by a man who accompanied her throughout her short life. Before and after her exploits, during her 12 months of captivity, her cruelly unjust trials and was present at her martyrdom by fire. Finally he was present and gave testimony at the great rehabilitation trial which finally vindicated and recognised this great Saint. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 13, 2021 )
