Batman: Last Knight On Earth Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Quan A. -- A swan song for Snyder, Capullo, Glapion, and Plascencia on Batman : In 2011, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo started to write and draw what would become one of the best runs on Batman. While the New 52 was a horrible era in DC for many, most comic book fans would gravitate towards the Batman run as a consistent source of quality and great storytelling from 2 creators at the top of their game. Fast forward nearly a decade later, and DC finds itself in a sort of flux. Batman has just ended his 85 issue run of depression, Superman is being written by Bendis, and Wonder Woman can't get a consistent voice/writer for more than a dozen issues. DC Rebirth started out as an amazing idea, allowing characters to go back to a simpler era before the new 52, but it quickly got convoluted due to clashing ideas and delays that led to the current status quo. It is out of this that Scott Snyder decides to return to Batman to tell what he calls the last Batman story, along with his partner in crime, Greg Capullo. And what a job this dynamic duo created. While this will not be the last Batman story written by Snyder and drawn by Capullo (as of writing this review, Death Metal is still solicited, which is a sequel to Dark Nights Metal), it damn well feels like it is. The story follows Batman at the end of the line, waking up in a post-apocalyptic DC Universe without memory of how it got to be that way. Determined to bring the world back to the way it was, Batman teams up with a surprising companion and journeys throughout the hellscape he woke up in to solve the mystery. The idea is pure Batman, giving him a mystery to solve and showing his unbroken will towards making things right. The highlights from Snyder here are the character moments he gives towards many of the DC Universe: his relationship with Alfred, Wonder Woman, the Batfamily, and many others are all given their moments to shine, and it's great, showing how Batman trusts his allies rather than building contingency plans to hurt or stop them all the time. The other cool thing that Snyder brought to the story is how the world changed and what the world is. Tons of great ideas are displayed here that I wish were delved into more detail, but the length of the book does leave more to be wanted. The final positive that I give Snyder here is that he ends the story with hope, which is what all superhero stories should end with. Batman is definitely a dark character, but that doesn't mean his story should always end in tragedy and darkness. Batman is a hero, and it makes sense that he should get a hero's ending. And of course, any Snyder Batman story would not be amazing if not for the great Greg Capullo. My personal favorite Batman artist, Capullo gets the chance to show off his Spawn side here because it's a Black Label book. His art is unhinged with all the violence, gore, and detail that a post apocalyptic world should look like. However, that doesn't mean it's gratuitous. All of the fight scenes flow well and are part of the story. And the praise doesn't go to just Capullo, but the rest of the art team, which is the same art team as the Batman run earlier mentioned: Jonathan Glapion, the inker, and FCO Plascencia, the colorist. Overall, this is an amazing read and one of the best Batman stories since DC Rebirth started (only slightly behind Batman Universe for me), and if Batman were to ever have a last story, you'd be hard pressed to find one better than this. Hats off to this Batman team, I hope Death Metal will be just as good. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2020 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Brandon Silvey -- Story is extremely hard to follow and understand : The artwork in this comic is amazing, but the story is extremely hard to follow. I kept rereading sections over and over again trying to figure out what I missed to help me understand what was going on. Eventually I just figured it would explain itself if I kept on reading, but it never did. The story is all over the fricking place and I'm mad I paid money for it. When I read the preview for it before purchasing the premise sounded pretty cool, but you soon get let down. The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars is because the artwork is very good and the Joker in a bottle idea was pretty cool as well as dialogue between him and Batman. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kevin Nguyen -- An End to Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman Saga : DC Powerhouse Team Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo return for one final Batman story in Batman: Last Knight on Earth. This DC Black Label book sees the Dark Knight waking up to an apocalyptic world where everything is just wrong. Accompanied by the severed living head of Joker, Batman traverses this new world to find out how and why it all went down. This hardcover collects all three issues of the mini-series. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from John -- Fitting end to the Snyder/Capullo run : Couldn't put it down. Will not get into detail to avoid spoilers but if you're a fan of the Snyder/Capullo run during the new 52, this is a definite must buy. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dan K -- One of the Best! : One of the coolest Batman stories I’ve read. A bit confusing but it all makes sense in the end. As far as I’m concerned Scott Synder & Greg Capullo are one the best Batman teams ever! Definitely check this out! ( Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2020 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Magic Mike -- POW BAM ZANG : I picked up this title because it was ranked so highly in graphic novels and I love me some Caped Crusader. However, this is not story was not all enjoyable. The batman-joker bromance was slightly interesting and the art was top notch. The plot was a slog because of the jarring transitions between different locations and narrators. The other reviews are correct, story is highly stylized and you'll either love it or hate it. This story did nothing for me and aside serving as geek trivia with my friends, left me unimpressed. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Chad -- Wild, Fun Romp : I found Last Knight on Earth to be a wild and fun romp. The story explodes with a great start and twists and turns through a very bizarre world. It’s quite easy to follow (unlike Arkham Asylum), but you’ll have many questions to which you’re only drip-fed the answers to until the very end where you’re met with a rather thoughtful climax. It’s one of the most unique and fresh Batman stories I’ve read, and even though I personally hate the Joker (much as Batman does), I found his comedic relief in this graphic novel really put the icing on the cake. It was a highly entertaining story that may well be my favorite Batman graphic novel alongside the Long Halloween. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from kkchoi -- Three stars just for the front and the artwork : The front part is good, especially the artwork and design. I like the lunatic batman outfits in particular. The middle and ending are poor because nothing is clear. The part of superman is ridiculously conceived just for the sake of removing the strongest man so that old Bruce can be left unchecked. The look of wonder woman is pathetic. I wonder why she aged so much and changed her taste, which remained the same for the last 100 years, in a mere 20-year time . The ending is too simple and expected, a bit like the plot in Total Recall but in an inferior way. Even the artwork in the later part gets unimpressive, probably because Greg didn't like how the story went. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sam -- The Batman ending we desserved : Fantastic book. If you have been folllowing Scott Snyder's work since the new 52 this book is the ultimate climax not only to his work on the character but a fitting end to the batman mythos. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from P. Milne -- Not for me : As others reviewers have pointed out, this story is all over the place, and too surreal. I have really enjoyed the work of these 2 before, especially Capullos amazing art work (in my opinion the finest Batman/Gotham artist). But I just cringed at the story here. The constant swap of dialogue between the 2 main groups of characters, it's a clever little trick the first couple of times, but after a while it becomes tiresome, and just not enjoyable in my opinion. Keep up the amazing art Greg, but I don't believe this story was not fit for your pen. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ahmed Tarik701 -- Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo did it again! : Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo will always be in my heart for their BATMAN run. My mother used to read me BATMAN stories as a child (A publisher here translated both DC and Marvel comics for a period of time during my childhood) and growing up, BATMAN became my role model and number one superhero! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gabriel franco -- The perfect conclusion to Snyder’s take on the Batman mythos : I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end.. Scott Snyder has revolutionised Batman, and his time with the character has been unforgettable. Last knight on earth is a wonderful conclusion to Snyder’s time with the character, and it’s worth purchasing if you enjoyed his previous works (court of owls, zero year, etc). I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Snyder in the future.. but until then, this book is an absolute must read!! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 10, 2020 )
